-Icon: A description of the content of an item. It is readily recognisable. It is a common currency for the cultural experience
- Emojis
- Iconographic reading is being able to read the semiotics of an image. To read the story behind it
- Minimal movie posters use shape and colour as an icon of certain emotions and themes, sharp objects suggest action whereas softer round objects may hint at comedy or romance
- Icons Rely on a pre-existing knowledge of its content. You can't read a washing machine label if you don't already know what they mean
- Images speak, they are designed to subtly communicate. However they play on pre existing cultural knowledge
- What does an image say and what do you say about an image
- The creative outcome or package is not created by just the artist; the viewer gives their half of the piece with their interpretation of it. The artist can only go so far before there is then a gap which needs to be filled be the viewer.
- Icons are useless without the end users interpretations
- An icons context also depends on its surroundings; on a door the female icon means a female toilet, but a female icon by itself simply signifies a female being
- Interpretation is flawed and so this opens up opportunities for creative experimentation and manipulation
- Looking rather than seeing
- How are icons being used? Why are they being used in this way?
- Things require deep analysis, read the individual icons and symbols. Read the details in between the lines
- Visual metaphor
- Compare two things to create meaning and message
* The art of the metaphor - TED ED
- Metaphors play on how we imagine with images
- They go past logic but somehow makes sense because of how we think with images
- Building on a metaphor
- Comparisons
- It puts ideas into a perspective we can recognise
- You can use metaphors to communicate a certain image or idea that can't be precisely represented through direct references or words
- You can play with the relationship between two objects to create a new representation or metaphor for something that should be there
