Microsoft Logo

Today I was in the University Library when I saw the Microsoft logo on a mouse. I found the logo looked odd and I did not know why until I realised how soft and pleasant the typeface looked. It looks like a friendly sans serif, nicely kerned and the kind of font a young business would use to be smart but not look too harsh and corporate. What I find odd about this is that Microsoft's logo is a harsh crisp sans serif font which of course suits the company hence why they use it. So when did Microsoft use this typeface? And was it for a short period because I have only seen it on rare occasions and I know they have recently re branded due to the release of Windows 8 so it can't be their recent logo. Or have they used it on products like this to appeal to their past consumer market and have not used it on their whole company.
